Bespoke Design for Jonathan Ward London

Welcome to the new fragrance by Jonathan Ward London featuring designs by Zoe Barker Textiles.

These luxury candles with boxes featuring Zoe Barker designs commissioned by Jonathan Ward London can be found in boutiques, beauty salons and luxury stores across the UK and beyond.

The candles are devine and as such I work closely with Jonathan Ward to create patterns that reflect the character of each hand crafted fragrance. Using my signature hand drawn elements and layer upon layer of texture these bespoke commissions work in unison with the Zoe Barker brand.

The latest fragrance ‘Fig Ultimatum’ was launched this week and the unveiling is very exciting as the style moves away from the more graphic ‘Russian Collection’ to more freehand expressionist marks.

Visit Jonathan Ward London to read more about the latest fragrance.

Fashion Motivation for Spring 2013

The sun was out this week and it brought with it some optimism. I always work better in the sun, my brain wakes up and I am generally a happier, more creative person. Unfortunately it seems to have hidden behind clouds again as we near the end of the week but I suppose it is still only March – there’s plenty of time yet. I am determined to remain positive and adopt some Spring creativity starting with planning a new personal project to get the creative juices flowing.

Those that know me and my background in fashion design are all to aware of my passion for clothes. So what better way to re-ignite some creative flare than to get back to it. I plan to produce a capsule collection just for fun, to prove I still can and to give my beloved machines some attention. Who knows, I may stumble across something that you all love and need in your life. What could become tricky is my ever expanding baby bump, which is already proving difficult to disguise in my usual wardrobe, I fear I may become a bit jealous of not being able to wear my creations – some adaptations may be necessary.

I love the whole design process and with fashion design I particularly enjoy the maths (I know, sad eh!). Combining textile design with clothing is really creative and my last collection (seen below) incorporated a digital style of print which is very different to my usual technique. Prints of New York City were muted beneath sheer fabrics and oversized shapes. Constructing the patterns and the garments that were creatively sketched (and inspired by paper doll cut outs) required a logical brain and I enjoyed the challenge. The last collection required weeks of experimentation with pattern shapes on and off the mannequin and it even involved balloons, wire and papier mache! The final results were a mix of precise pattern cutting and on the form draping. The most free-hand creative part was the de-construction of huge paper doll cut outs made from silk chiffon and the re-construction of it’s raw edges into draped garments with a structured base.

A brief description of the collection photographed below:
Challenging the established conventions of proportion and line, this collection encompasses a visual mix of unconventional shapes that offer volume and drape.

Prints inspired by New York skyscrapers are applied to chiffon ‘paper doll’ dresses that are deconstructed and draped in stark contrast to the voluminous roundness of over-sized linen coats.

Segmented ellipse sleeves are finished with precision yet allowed to drape organically working with the natural qualities of the fabric.

As my next project is a personal one (me thinks…) I’m going to enjoy the luxury of having the time to complete all stages of the processes we used at university – the research, the sketching, collecting mountains of fabric and textures, logging my finds and experimenting with techniques. As I have no lecturer or exams to pass I am going to use my blog as my log so I can track my progress and ensure that I’m meeting my targets.

My first and most important task is to find my inspiration…and to buy a new sketchbook!

I look forward to updating the blog with the highs and lows of the project. In the meantime I hope you enjoy the selection from the last photoshoot.

Much Love,

Zoe
